What Is the Spiritual Realm?

Emma (age 8) asked,

“What is the spiritual realm?”

Great question, Emma!

The spiritual realm is a place that exists parallel to (next to) our physical world. The spiritual realm is where God, angels, and other spiritual beings dwell.

Beings in the spiritual realm can interact with our physical world. We see examples of this in the Bible when angels appear to people to deliver messages from God (Luke 1:26–28).

The Bible also tells of demons (fallen angels) interacting with the physical world in an evil way (Mark 5:1–20).

Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” There is a war going on against the forces of evil in the spiritual realm. We must rely on God’s strength and stand firm against the attacks of our enemy.

God tells us how to withstand the evils in the spiritual realm: “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day” (Ephesians 6:13).

Read Ephesians 6:14–15 to learn about each piece of spiritual armor. It’s a good idea to memorize these verses. That way, you can recite them whenever you’re tempted and remember what to do!
