Red foxes are one of the most widespread mammalian species on earth, with over 40 recognized subspecies ranging over various habitats. They are the largest of the foxes, but even at that, they are fairly small creatures. Most only average around 10–15 pounds, although they commonly appear larger due to their fluffy coats.

Often thought of as tricksters, red foxes are quite smart. They sometimes dig several den sites scattered about their territory, which helps them evade predators. This behavior also gives them a ready place to move their babies (called kits) if they are threatened. In a similar fashion, they will also often hide extra food in various places so that they have it readily available in case good hunting is difficult when their next meal is due.

While you can count on red foxes to exhibit long tails, pointed ears, and a white-tipped tail (nearly always, anyway), you might be surprised to know many of them aren’t “red”! While the well-known reddish-orange fur coat is common among red foxes, they actually come in a range of colors—including variations of white, blond, silver, and black. What a way to show the creativity of their Creator!
