When It Happened: About 810 BC
Key People: Joel, People of Judah
Summary: God sent a horrible plague of locusts to destroy and devastate the land of Judah in response to the sinfulness and unfaithfulness of the people. This was the setting for Joel’s plea that the people return to the Lord in repentance and faith. Joel warned that a far worse day—the day of the Lord, a day of God’s wrath and judgment—would come. And in that day the locusts would seem as gnats to the people who refused to turn to God in obedience.
About God: God demands all our trust and obedience. He will judge severely. But His mercy is great, and His forgiveness is available through Jesus Christ.
