The planet Saturn has at least sixty-two moons, including one called Titan. This moon is larger than ours and the only one known to have an atmosphere, which is partly methane. Titan’s surface features lakes of what’s probably liquid methane. The small amount of methane surprised evolutionary astronomers who believe the planet is billions of years old.

Evolutionists also thought Titan would be covered with thousands of craters from billions of years of asteroid hits. But photos showed only sixty craters on half of Titan.

Research is showing our universe isn’t old! It’s young.

The spacecraft Cassini was launched on a twenty-year mission to study our solar system, particularly the planet Saturn.

Cassini gathered data about Saturn’s core and gravitational forces to try and explain how Saturn can have such a strong magnetic field. You see, magnetic fields lose energy over time, and Saturn is thought to be billions of years old, so it should have a weak magnetic field. Evolutionists thought maybe something called a dynamo kept it working but Cassini showed that won’t work.

Saturn’s magnetic field is strong because the planet’s young, created by God just a few thousand years ago.

The sixth planet in our solar system, Saturn, is surrounded by thousands of intricate rings. One spacecraft, Cassini, passed through these rings at the end of its mission.

As it passed through, it measured the gravitational pull of the rings and confirmed they’re too light to have lasted for billions of years. Cassini also measured dust coming from outer space, and found the rings are too clean to be old. Researchers were forced to conclude Saturn’s rings must somehow be young.

This doesn’t surprise those who start with God’s Word. We know Saturn’s rings are just a few thousand years old, created by God for his glory.

Saturn’s thousands of rings are the most spectacular of any known planet. They’re made of ice, dust, and rocks ranging in size from a sand grain to a building. The rings and their gaps are so stable each has its own name. And the rings are very intricate—some are even braided!

Many astronomers think these rings formed billions of years ago from the debris of a crashed asteroid or that Saturn’s tidal forces tore apart one of its satellites, arranging the debris into rings. But the rings are way too intricate for either of those origin stories.

These beautiful rings were handmade by God.

The giant planet Saturn is made almost entirely of liquid and gas. It’s seven hundred and fifty times the volume of earth. But it’s density’s so low, you could throw it in a giant bathtub and it would float!

Saturn’s very different from earth, obviously. Our planet is solid, and so are Mercury, Venus, and Mars. This is a puzzle to secular astronomers. If our solar system formed from a spinning cloud of dust and gas, why do we have both kinds of planets? Other solar systems only have one or the other.

Our solar system has such diversity because God created it that way.

Today we’re finishing a series on creation basics. This last one is found in Genesis eleven. After the flood, God commanded Noah’s descendants to fill the earth. Eventually they decided to stay together and build a city and tower. So, God confused their languages and forced them to spread out and fill the earth.

This event is very important because it explains how our gene pool got split up, resulting in different cultures and ethnicities.

You see, the Bible’s clear—we’re all one race, descended from Adam and Eve and made in God’s image. The reason we look a little different is because of the events that happened right there.

Did you know when you look at the world, you aren’t looking at how God made the earth originally? First creation was marred by sin, then the Bible tells us the flood destroyed the world of that day. What we have today is very different to that original creation.

Miles of rock layers, billions of fossils, mountain ranges, ocean trenches, volcanos, earthquakes, deserts, glaciers, canyons, and even the shape of the continents, are all the result of the flood and its after-effects. Without the global flood, one can’t explain many of the features of our planet. It’s the flood that provides the perfect mechanism to powerfully shape our world.

When you think of creation, do you picture Adam surrounded by tigers, polar bears, wolves, and other modern animals? Well, let’s look at what Scripture says. Genesis tells us God created life to reproduce according to its kind. Later, we’re told Noah was to take animals according to their kinds on the ark.

Researchers have determined that, in most cases, “kind” is equivalent to family in our modern classification system. That means there was a cat kind, a bear kind, and a dog kind at the beginning, not all the species we have today. Species—like tigers, lions, and cougars—are the result of speciation since the flood.

All this week we’re going back to the basics of creation. Yesterday we learned the age of the earth is just six thousand years. We don’t live in a billions of years old universe.

At the end of creation week God said all he had made was “very good.” God’s original creation was perfect. Now, if our earth is old then that would mean there were millions of years of death, disease and suffering before God declared everything was “very good.” But that’s not the character of the God who calls death an enemy!

God’s original creation was free from death and disease. Those are the result of Adam’s sin and the curse. It’s a groaning world today.

This week we’re looking at five creation basics that come from the Bible. The first one is the age of the earth. Now, the Bible doesn’t give us an exact age for the earth, but it does give us the information we need to calculate an age of the earth.

You see, Genesis tells us God created in six literal days. Then it goes on to list detailed chronologies from Adam to Abraham. When you add up those dates you get two thousand years plus six days. We know there’s been two thousand years from Abraham to Christ and then two thousand years from Christ to us. That’s just six thousand years, the age of creation given by our Creator.

All this week we’ve looked at the claim that our bodies are full of useless evolutionary leftovers, and we’ve seen this argument is, well, useless!

As our last example, we’ll look at goosebumps. These bumps form when tiny muscles contract, pulling the hair upright. In furry mammals, this helps increase fur’s insulation but, since it doesn’t do that for us, some people say goosebumps are useless. But this muscle action creates extra heat, draws oil to your skin as moisturizer, and heightens our sensitivity in a threatening situation.

Since we didn’t evolve, we don’t have useless structures.

Have you ever fallen on your tailbone? It hurts horribly and you can’t sit, stand, or lie comfortably for a while. That’s because many of your important muscles are anchored to your tailbone so when you fall on it, all of those muscles get sore.

But the tailbone is often called a useless organ. Even the name “tailbone” suggests a time in our supposed evolution when we had tails. But, as a fall will demonstrate, the tailbone isn’t useless! Not only does it give your muscles somewhere to attach, they form a net to anchor your internal organs in place!

If evolution were true, our bodies should be full of leftovers from the past. But, starting with God’s Word, our bodies are designed by God. They’re marred by the curse, but we wouldn’t expect to find them filled with useless structures. And we don’t!

One example of a so-called useless structure is the palmaris longus muscle. This muscle stretches from your arm to your palm and helps you flex your wrist. But about fifteen percent of people don’t have one and they get along just fine. So, is this muscle useless? Not at all. It actually gives better grip strength so while you’re fine without it, you’re better off with it.

After the flood, Noah and his family offered sacrifices to the Lord. God had spared them from the wickedness of man and verses in the Old and New Testament make it clear these eight were the only people who survived.

It was then that God put his rainbow in the clouds and made a promise to never again destroy all flesh with a flood. Now many Christians argue the flood was just a local event. But if that’s true, God’s promise is worthless and it’s been broken over and over. There’ve been many devastating local floods since Noah’s day.

God doesn’t break his promises. The flood was global.

When Jesus talked about creation, Adam and Eve, Lot, and more, he always treated them as real people and real events. And when he spoke of the flood he compared the reality of this past judgment, to the reality of his coming judgment on sin.

Jesus said, “as in the days of Noah so it will be when the Son of Man comes.” But if the flood was just a local flood, as some Christians argue, how can Jesus compare the two? The coming judgment isn’t just a local judgment. Jesus will judge the wickedness of man—just as God did at the time of Noah. The comparison only works because Genesis is history and the flood was global.

The ark was a massive ship. Five hundred ten feet long, fifty-one feet high, and eighty-five feet wide. It easily fit all the animals needed, plus supplies, and Noah’s family.

Some people argue the flood was local, not global. But why would God command Noah to build such a massive ship if he could’ve just moved to an area outside of God’s judgment?

And Genesis tells us every land-dwelling creature and every person outside the ark perished. But if the Flood was local, some animals and people would’ve survived.

When we ignore what the Bible clearly teaches, we make God out to be a liar. Instead, we need to take God at his Word.

Genesis seven tells us that during the flood of Noah’s day, the water covered all the high hills to a depth of over twenty feet. Now, some people argue the flood was just local to the Mesopotamian valley. But how could a local flood cover all the mountains in twenty feet of water?

Water seeks its own level; it won’t cover all the hills in one area without spilling into other areas. And, besides, the flood lasted over a year. No small, regional flood has ever lasted that long! You can’t claim the Bible teaches a local flood without completely ignoring what the text says.

Genesis says Noah’s flood covered all the high hills and destroyed every land-dwelling creature not on the Ark. So why do some people believe it was just a local flood?

It’s because they’ve already compromised on the age of the earth. You see, when you reinterpret Genesis to add in millions of years, you’ve got a big problem with the flood. The supposed long ages come from the rock layers. But, if there was a global flood, those rock layers can’t be old. So not only do you have to reinterpret the days in Genesis, now you’ve got to change the flood too.

Instead of changing God’s Word, you know what we need to do? We need to trust it from the beginning.

Nearly all of the world’s opals are found in my home country of Australia. That’s because in nature opals only form under very specific conditions. And Noah’s flood would’ve produced just the right mix of conditions to allow opals to form.

You see, opals don’t take millions of years to form. In the lab they can be produced in just weeks and the man-made opal is almost indistinguishable from the natural-made one.

Gems like opals remind us that God can make something beautiful out of anything—even his judgment on the world. God can take any sinner and, through his Son, turn them into a thing of great beauty.

Geologists who start with millions of years have a hard time explaining how the right chemicals and unlikely conditions needed to form emeralds came together at just the right time. Well, that’s because they ignore the Bible’s history!

The relatively rare ingredients needed to form emeralds are found in different types of rocks. They find each other as they’re transported and mixed together by hot water, conditions only met during major earth movements and rising waters during mountain building.

The flood of Noah’s day provides the perfect conditions. Emeralds remind us of the truth of the history in God’s Word.

Sapphires and rubies are among Earth’s most valuable gems. They’re both varieties of the same mineral, corundum, which is made from aluminum and oxygen. After diamonds, corundum is the hardest mineral.

During the global flood, continental plates rapidly crashed into one another. The intense pressure and heat transformed flood deposits into super-hard rocks with gems. Magma, rising from the mantle, picked up these gems, bringing them to the surface. Others were brought up by crashing plates.

We only have sapphires and rubies because of the processes of the flood of Noah’s day.

Diamonds are thought to be one of Earth’s oldest substances. And they are! But they aren’t billions of years old. They were formed in creation rocks so they’re only around six thousand years old.

Carbon-14 can only last for tens of thousands of years before it decays away. But researchers have found carbon-14 in diamonds. If they really are billions of years old, there shouldn’t be any carbon-14 left—but there is! And diamonds—the hardest natural material on earth—are too hard to have been contaminated.

Diamonds aren’t just beautiful—they point to the truth of a young earth, which comes from the history in God’s Word.
