The doctrine
of marriage is dependent upon the literal history in Genesis 1-11. When
Jesus was asked about divorce (which obviously concerns marriage) in Matthew
19, He answered by quoting directly from Genesis chapter 1 and Genesis
chapter 2. (By the way, Genesis 1 and 2 are not two different accounts
of Creation: Genesis 1 is an overview of the six days of Creation in chronological
order, and Genesis 2 is a detailed account of the sixth day of Creation.)
The meaning of marriage is dependent upon its literal history-upon its
origin as given in the book of Genesis being true. Paul in Ephesians 5,
as well as Jesus Christ, taught that husband and wife become one in marriage
(one spiritually and also one physically) based upon the fact that they
were one flesh-Eve was taken out of Adam's side. The first recorded words
of Adam were that his wife was 'bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh.'
Therefore, oneness in marriage is based upon the historical oneness of
one flesh.
Also, marriage is to be one man for one woman for life-not a man and a
man or a woman and a woman. God made a man and a woman-not a man and a
man! If Genesis is not literal history, then marriage could be anything
you want to make it.
It logically follows that if the church teaches that Genesis 1-11 is just
mythology or metaphor, then they could defend homosexual marriage. Sadly,
an increasing number of people in the church are condoning homosexual
behavior and even ordaining homosexual pastors. You will invariably find
that these people do not believe in a literal Genesis and the creation
of Adam and Eve as clearly stated in Genesis 1 and 2.
It's also important to recognize that the only reason you can insist that
marriage must be one man for one woman for life is if Genesis 1-11 is
true. People can hold to the doctrine of marriage inconsistently by not
believing Genesis 1-11 as history-but ultimately they can't defend their
position.
For those Christians who believe that God used evolution to bring man
and woman into existence, there is a major problem. If you believe that
God evolved Adam and Eve from ape-like creatures by creating special souls
for them, then that would mean the woman Eve came from an ape-woman and
the man Adam came from an ape-man. If the woman came from an ape-woman,
then this has destroyed the whole basis of marriage. The Bible makes it
clear that the woman came from the man, not from some other creature.
If people want to reinterpret marriage and not insist on the Biblical
doctrine as Paul and Jesus taught in the New Testament, then they have
to attack and destroy the foundational book of Genesis as literal history.
This is what is happening in Western culture today.
