Emergencies happen every day ...

Everyone remembers major tragic events such as the Oklahoma City bombing, the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the Columbine school shootings, and natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina. However, there is a tendency in our society to feel incidents like that "cannot happen here," and we forget less "sensational" incidents that commonly occur, especially in faith-based organizations. These include incidents such as church shootings in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1999 claiming seven lives, Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 2006 claiming five lives, and Brookfield, Wisconsin in 2005 claiming seven lives, as well as the 2007 shootings in a Colorado ministry and church that claimed 5 lives.

Millions of people go to places of worship every week and leaders of these places are faced with the possibility of violence, medical emergency, or sudden severe weather, and the responsibility and liability that come with all this.

... is your ministry ready?

Faith-based organizations are generally "behind the curve" compared to the secular business world in the area of security and emergency planning. This book was written to provide a starting point. It was developed to act as a catalyst to ensure that proper plans are developed and put into place—no matter what the scope of the emergency and no matter what the size of the organization—before an incident occurs.
